ABOUT US

Somerset Seed and Sod, Inc., is  located in Orange County, Virginia which is in the central part of the state and where history and beauty  abounds with historical home sites,  (Montpelier and Monticello) fertile farmland and the Blue Ridge mountains.

Somerset Seed and Sod, Inc., has been in business since 2003 and is currently  growing  150 acres of turf type tall fescue / Kentucky bluegrass sod. The seed mixtures used to grow the sod have been developed especially for our operation by the Jonathan Green Co., taking into account the soil types and climate conditions for the area.

Somerset Seed and Sod Inc.,   is owned and operated by Andy and Audrey Hutchison. There are two assistants that help with delivery of the sod as well as overall management of the sod.  Andy has lived in Orange County, Va. since the early 70’s and comes from a strong farming background,  his family owned and operated a cattle and grain farm for many years.   Audrey’s family has been in the sod farming business since the early 70’s in Loudoun County, Va. Andy & Audrey live locally and are involved in both community  organizations  such as the  Somerset  Steam and Gas Engine Association  as well as several  professional  organizations,  Virginia Sod Growers, Inc., Turfgrass Producers International and  Virginia Turfgrass  Council.  Learn more about these organizations on our Links page.

Seeding  of the fields is done in late Summer/early Fall to insure the seed gets a good head start on its growth and  an established root system before Winter weather sets in.  It takes 12 to 18 months for the seed to become sod and for the sod to become strong and mature enough to be harvested.   Somerset Seed and Sod, Inc.,  DOES NOT put any plastic mesh netting on the fields after seeding is done.

The sod is pulled up (harvested) using  a  HarveStack  automatic sod harvester developed by  Trebro  Manufacturing, Inc.  The harvester is programmed to cut the sod in strips that measure 2 feet wide by 5 feet long (10 square feet) then roll the strip up for easier handling and to load 54 strips (rolls) onto a wooden pallet.  Each roll can weigh anywhere from 15 to 35 pounds depending on dry or wet soil conditions during harvesting.   There is a pallet deposit of $ 10.00 for each wooden pallet used for your order.   Deposit money refunded upon return of the pallet in good useable condition.

Save $$   Bring your vehicle to the farm and pick up any amount of sod you may need.  There is someone to help load. Bring protective covering for the inside of your vehicle.  Please call ahead with your pick-up order amount and an estimated time of arrival so we can be sure to provide you with the freshest cut sod.

Delivery is available for an additional charge ( $350.00) and  a minimum order of 2160 square feet ( 4 pallets) to the Charlottesville and immediate surrounding areas.

There are no restroom facilities in the sod fields.
